Launched in October 1981, the ATR 42 entered revenue service on December 9, 1985. The initial model, the ATR 42-300, was the standard production version of the ATR 42 family until 1996. In 1996, the ATR 42-500 was introduced and became the standard production model. Features of the -500 include a revised interior, more powerful engines, improved six- blade propellers and increased cruising speed and range.
