The Airbus A320 is one of the most popular aircraft series ever, onlyrivalled by the Boeing 737 series.
The A320 was the first aircraft to feature fly-by-wire technology, which has since been a standard on all new Airbus types, as well as some Boeing types. The A320 series varies in size from the smallest, A319 via the A320 to the A321, amongst them seating from 124 to 220 passengers. There is also a fourth member of the family, the A318, which was launched in 1999. This aircraft is in its flight- test programme, and is expected to enter airline service during the fall of 2002.
The only aircraft that are really similar to the A320 series is the similarly sized Boeing 737, and also the Boeing 757. The A320 series is usually distinguishable by its winglets. The only exception being early A320 models, dubbed the A320-100. Only a few A320-100 models were produced, with the production standardizing on the -200 model shortly after launch. To further help with the identification of these aircraft, we take a look at the tail section. On the A320 series, the end of the fuselage extends backwards from the vertical stabilizer into a cone, whereas on the B737, it curves upward to meet the vertical stabilizer.
